In his speech to that group, Dr. Radhakrishnan said that he was very uncomfortable with celebrating his birthday. He said that his birthday should be celebrated as “Teachers’ Day,” honoring the other Great Teachers of India and Bangladesh. Since 1967, September 5 has been known as Teachers’ Day.
One of Dr. Radhakrishnan’s best friends, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, had a lot of good things to say about him: “He has done many things to help his country. But most of all, he is a great teacher. On September 5, 1888, Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan was born in the pilgrim town of Tirutani. He was born into a middle-class family. People say that his father didn’t want him to learn English because he wanted to become a priest.
But the boy was so good at what he did that he was sent to school first in Thirupati and then Vellore. Later, he went to study philosophy at the Christian College in Madras. Radhakrishnan got interested in philosophy by accident, but he became a great philosopher because he was sure of himself, could focus, and had strong beliefs.
He was an inspiring teacher who was very well-liked by his students at Presidency College, Madras, where he taught for the first time. When he was hired as a lecturer at Calcutta University, he was only 29 years old. Andhra University, where he served as vice-chancellor from 1931 to 1936, was named in his honor. In 1939, he became Vice-Chancellor of Banaras Hindu University.
Two years later, he took over the Sir Sayaji Rao Chair in Indian Culture and Civilization in Banaras. It was in 1952 that Dr. Radhakrishnan was appointed Vice President of India by the Indian Parliament. In 1962, he held this position for five years before he was elevated to president.
