Eligibility Criteria


● A candidate for the Indian Revenue Service must be one of the following:
o An Indian national.
o A person of Indian descent who has relocated to India permanently from Pakistan, Myanmar, Sri Lanka, Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi, Zaire, Ethiopia, or Vietnam.

Educational Qualification:
● Any of the following qualifications are required of the candidate:
● A Central, State, or Deemed University diploma.
● A distance education or correspondence education degree.
● A certificate or diploma from an Open University.
● A qualification recognised by the Indian government as being comparable to one of the aforementioned qualifications.

The following candidates are also eligible, but must present proof of eligibility from a competent authority at their institute/university at the time of the main examination; otherwise, they will not be permitted to take the exam.
● Candidates who have passed their MBBS final exam but have yet to complete their internship.
● Candidates who have passed the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI), ICSI, or ICWAI final exam.
● A bachelor’s degree from a private college or university.
● Any degree from a foreign university that has been recognised by the Association of Indian Universities is acceptable.

Age Limit:
Caste reservations have different age restrictions. A candidate’s age must be at least 21 years old. The General category has a maximum age limit of 32 years. The following are the upper age limits: For the OBC: 35 years and up Up to 37 years for SC/ST. Certain candidates who are backward in terms of other variables, as well as physically challenged people, are granted an exception to the upper age limit.

IRS Preliminary Syllabus for UPSC
● UPSC’s preliminary examination is solely for the purpose of screening.

● Both Paper I (current affairs) and Paper II (aptitude test) will include multiple choice, objective type questions worth 200 points each, with two hours given for each paper.

IRS Mains Syllabus for UPSC
● Candidates who pass the preliminary examination are obliged to take the mains examination.
● UPSC’s main examination is aimed to assess a candidate’s academic knowledge and ability to convey it in a consistent manner.
● The test is subjective in character and is administered in stages.
● The papers in Indian languages and English will be of Matriculation or similar grade and will only serve as a qualification. The grades earned in these papers will not be used to determine a student’s ranking.
● Candidates will be required to respond to the English and Indian Languages papers in English and the appropriate Indian language.
● Candidates who pass the examination will be invited to an interview. The mains test requires students to pass each and every paper. The candidates are chosen on the basis of a merit list.

Following selection, selected applicants attend the Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration (LBSNAA) in Mussoorie, Uttarakhand, for a three-month Foundation Course.
Following that, IRS(IT) Officer Trainees (OTs) attend the National Academy of Direct Taxes (NADT) in Nagpur, Maharashtra, for a 16-month specialised training programme, while IRS(C&IT) OTs attend the National Academy of Customs, Indirect Taxes, and Narcotics (NACIN) in Faridabad, Haryana.
National Academy of Direct Taxes
● National Academy of Direct Taxes in Nagpur, Maharashtra is the staff training college of the IRS(IT).
