Close behind her are Garima Lohia from Buxar, Bihar, Uma Harathi N from Hyderabad, and Smriti Mishra from Noida, who have secured the second, third, and fourth ranks respectively. Originally from Greater Noida, Ms. Kishore expressed immense joy at her achievement, especially considering that she didn’t clear the preliminary round in her first two attempts. Despite working as an advisor at a multinational firm for two years, she discovered her true passion for public service. While discussing her preparation strategy, Ms. Kishore, who chose political science and international relations as her optional subjects, highlighted the significance of relying on a reliable website for current affairs, even though there is an abundance of information on the internet. She placed trust in her writing skills and dedicated considerable effort to practicing writing for the Mains exam. Garima Lohia, who secured the impressive All India Rank (AIR) 2 at the age of 24, successfully cleared the civil services examination on her second attempt. Coming from Buxar, Bihar, she completed her graduation from Delhi University’s Kirori Mal College.
Initially, her interests did not lean towards the Civil Services. However, during the pandemic, she developed a strong conviction to join the services and made a firm decision to clear the UPSC exam.
Uma Harathi, aged 28 and hailing from Telangana, achieved the third rank in the civil services examination. Meanwhile, Smriti Mishra, aged 24 and from Uttar Pradesh, secured the fourth rank.
The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) conducts the yearly Civil Services Examination, which determines the appointments to prestigious positions such as the IAS, IFS, IPS, and Central Services – Group A and Group B. In its recommendations, the UPSC has identified a total of 933 candidates for appointment to these positions. Among the recommended candidates, there are 99 individuals from the Economically Weaker Section (EWS) category, 263 from the Other Backward Classes (OBC), 154 from the Scheduled Caste (SC), 72 from the Scheduled Tribe (ST), and 345 candidates from the General Category. According to the UPSC’s press statement, the vacancies include 180 positions in the IAS, 38 in the IFS, 200 in the IPS, and 604 in the Central Services.
